Welcome to the Free Spirit FREEDOM virtual gallery of photographs, images and narratives. Please join us on our journey as we explore the memories and lives of the African Americans of Orange County, North Carolina…from the past to the present, with a view to the future. Let us honor the legacy of people of color, celebrate our diverse heritage, and advance the cultures of all people.

Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal [AME] Church

Free Spirit FREEDOM is a cultural arts initiative that utilizes artistic expressions to promote a cross-cultural memory that deepens and enriches the various dimensions of Orange County North Carolina. With input from the community we are collecting and archiving photographs, historic images, narratives and poetry for an on-going public exhibition. We are bringing to light the beautiful spectrum of legacies, heritages and cultures that characterize Orange County, giving emphasis to the story of African Americans and traditionally marginalized peoples.

Late 2010, Free Spirit FREEDOM went from concept to reality, and in January 2011, we held our inaugural exhibition in downtown Hillsborough. We have since installed photography exhibitions and hosted storytelling programs in Orange County showcasing the Black church, schools for children of color, black-owned businesses, African American military veterans, civil rights movement, black elected officials and community engagement .

Hillsboro All-Stars

Our hope is to develop Free Spirit FREEDOM to serve as a resource relating the tribulations, afflictions, triumphs and achievements in the universal struggle for equality, freedom, humanity, justice and peace. Through the arts, we are building bridges of cross-cultural understanding.
